Looking Back

Before we look to the future in coming blogs, it's fun to look back at what brought us here.

There's really only one reason people remember a game company: Great games.

Apogee published, co-designed, produced and created numerous great games (often released under our 3D Realms label). These include:

Commander Keen (1, 2, 3, 4 & 5)
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Duke Nukem (1 & 2 -- both side scrollers)
Rise of the Triad
Duke Nukem 3D
Raptor
Death Rally
Stargunner
Balls of Steel
Shadow Warrior
Max Payne 1 & 2
Prey

We were also involved in the original creation of Descent and Blood, two games that were started under Apogee, but we later sold the rights to other publishers well into the development of those games.

(BTW, the new 3D Realms is still making and producing terrific and highly anticipated games, like Ion Fury, Wrath, Core Decay and Graven.)

We're excited to be back and to extend that amazing list, working with super talented indie teams to assist them in making the best games they can make. That's really the key role of an indie publisher, along with making sure there's good PR and marketing in place to get the word out about these titles.

Part of the relaunch of Apogee has been the modernization of our classic logo, originally designed in early 1991 by a talented artist (an artist who we sadly don't have record of anymore!). Check out these two versions of the classic logo that we didn't end up using...

And here are a few of the designs we also didn't go with for the new version...

The logo we ended up using for the relaunch (an exciting reimagining of the original), ended up being designed by a senior level artist at a very famous game studio, with clear instructions to not reveal their name, as they’re not permitted to do side gigs like this! Alas, it seems with both logos we'll never be able to credit the artists. Grateful for their stellar work, though!

Until next blog, good gaming!
